The ENIGMA Project Print
The Electromagnetic Fields Information Program "ENIGMA" aims to set up a validation centre in order to provide information to specialist scientists and professionals who provide public health and prevention advice as a result of their direct or indirect contact with the general public.

Given that there are several questions that can be posed about technology itself and its consequences, and that there is a considerable gap in terms of awareness on public health issues in Greece, it is considered to be exceptionally important to plan and implement information projects and actions such as this one.

The "ENIGMA" project is under the supervision of  both the Department of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Medical Statistics / Faculty of Social Medicine, Neurology and Psychiatry / Medical School / Athens University, Greece and the Hellenic Society of Social Paediatrics and Health Promotion and is one of a series of programs focusing on different public health issues, all currently being implemented under the scientific supervision of Dr. Eleni Petridou, Professor of Preventive Medicine and Epidemiology.

The project includes developing both a website to deliver information (www.enigma-program.gr) and pamphlets, while at the same time research is being conducted which aims to measure the views and ideas of specific focus groups.

The first pilot research project presented back in July 2007, is related to recording the opinions of medical doctors from the Attica region on the potential consequences of electromagnetic fields generated by mobile telecommunications. This study revealed a considerable lack of proper briefing on this issue, coupled with much confusion. Other research projects will soon follow, this time targeting doctors from all over Greece, as well as other population subgroups.

Visitors to the website (www.enigma-program.gr) can search for information on the following topics:

  • References that set out the conclusions of respected scientific bodies, as well as results of published scientific projects.
  • Electromagnetic field-related technology information.
  • Perception studies that endeavour to determine the level of awareness of general public as well as specific population subgroups on various issues relating to electromagnetic fields and health.
